Flamenco in Seville

Sep 30 , 2011

Flamenco in Seville is easy to find, whether you want to learn the history of this famous dance or want to see a live performance. You can even take lessons and try it for yourself. Flamenco is an important part of the culture, and it's even the basis for a bi-annual Seville festival.

History

The exact origin time frame for Flamenco is unknown, although it dates back to at least the late 1700s. Some form of the dance was likely performed long before then, as it probably originated with Andalusian gypsies. The word "flamenco" is supposedly tied to the gypsies, although the name may also be a reference to flames, signifying the dance's fiery nature.

Types

Classic Flamenco is made up of several parts: dancing, hand clapping, singing, and guitar playing. Although the dancers are the principle attraction, the guitar players and their music are also an integral part of the experience.

Although traditional Flamenco is still the most popular form of this historic dance, other musical styles have had an influence. Don't be surprised to find varieties such as new flamenco, flamenco rock, and flamenco fusion, although the original still dominates.

Performances

Flamenco in Seville is a popular form of entertainment, with regular performances in large and small venues. Popular performance sites include Los Gallos, El Patio Sevillano, the Auditorio Alvarez Quintero, Tablao El Arenal, and El Palacio Andaluz. You can find shows by well-known performers and talented new dancers and musicians just arriving on the scene. Some of the venues serve drinks, tapas and even full meals along with the show.

You can learn about the history of Flamenco at the Museo del Baile Flamenco in Seville. This museum shows the way in which this art form has integrated itself into Spanish culture, and it also hosts performances.

Although the larger venues offer longer, more elaborate shows with more performers, the smaller places are more intimate and less touristy, offering an authentic overall experience.

Festivals

Every two years, in even-numbered years, Flamenco in Seville reaches new heights as the city hosts the Bienal de Flamenco in September and October. This major festival features some of the most renowned performers. It's a must-see for dance fans who are fortunate enough to visit the city in the fall during a festival year.

Classes

Flamenco classes are popular in Seville, both for people who aspire to dance professionally and those who wish to indulge as a hobby. As a tourist, you won't have time for a long course of lessons, but many of the local dance schools offer intensive workshops and private instruction. There are courses for everyone, from raw beginners up through experienced dancers who just want to hone their technique.
